ARGENTINA: Kirchner lacerates "pro-opposition" media

Four different polls suggested this week that the contest in the province of Buenos Aires ahead of the mid-term legislative elections on 28 June is a virtual tie between former president Néstor Kirchner and Francisco de Narváez. Kirchner is heading the government list of candidates; De Narváez the slate presented by the opposition conservative alliance Unión Pro. Kirchner tore into the press this week for backing his rival, and undermining democracy, after the national daily Clarí­n ran a piece speculating that the government might try and bring the 2011 presidential elections forward by a year should it suffer a setback in the mid-terms.
